6 FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued ahead of overnight storm chances

OMAHA, Neb. - Thursday is a 6 First Alert Weather Day ahead of an overnight risk for strong storms. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for portions of the viewing area, including the Omaha Metro, until 4AM Friday.

A few spotty showers or storms may develop ahead of the line anytime after 8PM but the main threat comes after midnight as the line moves through.

The storms after 8pm will be very spotty and could produce some hail if they develop but we are on first alert for the overnight line... be aware after 11PM! It’s the line after midnight that greatly increases our storm chances as it moves through. The most likely timeframe for the Metro is 2-4AM Friday.

Damaging straight line wind is the main threat with this line but a couple of quick spin up tornadoes are possible too. This line will move NW to SE through the area as it tries to produce wind gusts as high as 75 mph.

An increasing threat for flooding is also a concern... after our recent round of heavy rain an additional 1-2.5″ is possible over many of the same areas. Flood Watches are in place for the areas of the highest concern.

This line should easily be gone by the time you wake up and start your Friday. Then the rest of Friday will be quiet, cool and a bit breezy with a high near 70 degrees likely.

As we head into the Memorial Day Weekend, most of Saturday should be rather dry and quiet but there is a storm chance by the evening hours. The greatest severe weather threat should stay south of the area with this round.
