England defeated New Zealand by 20 runs in the crucial first group match of the Super 12 stage of the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup 2022.


New Zealand suffered their first defeat of the tournament while England's victory brightened their chances of reaching the semi-finals.


In this match played in Brisbane, England won the toss and decided to bat first.


Batting first, the England team scored 179 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted overs, English captain Jos Buttler scored 79 runs and Alex Hales scored 52 runs.


For New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson took 2 wickets while Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee and Ash Sodhi took one wicket each.
